Association Sportive de Saint-Étienne Loire is a record-holding club in central France. From the city of Saint-Étienne, just 50km south-west of Lyon, ASSE has won the most Ligue 1 titles of any club, with a dominant period in French football in the 1960s and 70s culminating in a European Cup final appearance in 1976.
Formed in 1919, Les Verts or the Greens, known for their trademark green coloured home kit, came to prominence in France in the 1960s. Under successive coaches Jean Snella, Albert Batteux and Robert Herbin, ASSE captured an incredible eight Ligue 1 titles in twelve seasons including four league-and-cup doubles.
With the likes of the prolific Hervé Revelli and locally born striker Georges Bereta, St-Étienne won four titles in a row with Revelli top scorer in the league each time.
After almost 30 years of no silverware, the club won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2013, beginning a new modern era for the club, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League in two consecutive seasons.
