Information on Costa Rica National Football Team World Cup tickets

Costa Rica is one of the progressive team in CONCACAF lately. Compared to Mexico and USA, their world cup tradition might not be that long. Yet, they can be considered quite consistent and qualifying to world cup finals seems to become a regular agenda for them. El Ticos have been able to earn one place in the final round five times with two of which had respectable results for a small country in the Caribbean Sea.

Overall Campaign

El Ticos’ campaigns in the world cup finals have not always been satisfactory but they did manage to make a remarkable story in two editions, Italy 1990 and Brasil 2014. The World Cup 1990 was their debut and they were not the favourite to even pick up a point once they were seeded alongside Brasil, Sweden and Scotland in group C. However, nobody could no even believed that this Central America side managed to do quite well in the preliminary round and snatched two victories and only lost to Brasil. They eventually advanced but were halted by Czechoslovakia in the round of 16. In Brasil 2014, they even made a better progress by picking up two wins and one draw at the group stage even though they were included in the group of death with the world cup winners, Italy, Uruguay and England. Cost Rica could even finish on the top of the standings. Their campaign endured to the quarter finals only because of being beaten on penalties by Netherlands after a goalless tie.

In their three other appearances, their results were not worth remembering. Los Ticos failed to progress from the group stage in 2002, 2006 and 2018. Their campaign in Germany 2006 was the worst with three defeats from the host Germany, Ecuador and Poland.

Iconic Moments

Costa Rica surely have some moments of glory in the world cup. The best ones were in 2014. The match against Greece in the round of 16 was unforgettable. They took the lead through Bryan Ruiz but Greece equalised on the last minute as Papastathopoulos found the back of the net. The game had to be decided on a shootout. Luckily, they had Keylor Navas between the sticks who saved the day, including on penalties. Jorge Pinto’s men officially reached the last eight for the first time in their campaign. Another iconic moment was an unlikely win against Italy on match day two. Gli Azurri was the favourite but their supposedly prolific striker, Mario Ballotelli wasted several golden chances while El Ticos snatched one goal through Bryan Ruiz again.

Their most disappointing one was at the quarter final in Brasil 2014. They were quite able to level Louis Van Gaal’s side and managed to deny some of Dutch’s opportunities. Unfortunately, De Oranje’s mentality and unexpected tactical change at the end stunned them. They lost 3-4 on penalties after holding Arjen Robben and Co in a goalless draw for 120 minutes.

Top Figures

Costa Rica’s main figures of their shocking results in the world cup are Hernan Medford, Keylor Navas, Bryan Ruiz, Celso Borges and Michael Umana. Meanwhile, the key managers behind their triumphant campaign in 1990 and 2014 are Bora Milutinvoic and Jorge Pinto.
