Information on Malmö FF Champions League tickets

Malmo FF is one of the Nordic clubs which have the best result in Champions League history. However, they have not been playing regularly in this top flight competition. Their campaign mostly gets stuck at the earlier stages except on one occasion. In 2021/22, the club attempts to make their return to the final round through a play off stage. The European games in the 22,500-seat Eleda Stadion with its lively atmosphere would not be like any other in Scandinavia.

There have been many Swedish internationals making their professional debut in Malmoe, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Yet, he is not one of the few names who deserve special recognition for their great contribution for the club. Those few names are Andreas Ljunberg, Tommy Anderson, Tommy Hanson, Staffan Tapper, Patrik Andersson, Martin Dahlin and Stefan Schwarz. They were all under Bobby Houghton, the only notable manager in the club’s history who managed to guide them in their only glorious campaign in the late 1970s.

Top Achievements of Malmo

Malmoe have never won any continental title but they remain the only Northern Europe-based team who had the real chance for the Champions league title. No other Nordic club could ever achieve such progress up to now. Their real opportunity for silverware came in 1978/79 season when Bobby Houghton’s men were able to reach the final. Unfortunately, they did not succeed as Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest performed slightly better with Peter Shilton between the stick and netted one goal to bury their dream.

Since then, Malmoe have never been able to reach further than second round or group stage in the new Champions League format despite qualifying from the play-off round on several occasions. The same stage they could progress from their first entry in 1964/65 to 1976/77, their last appearance prior to their sudden success two years later.

Iconic Moments in the Champions League

The 1978/79 season is certainly the best one in Malmoe’s history. They managed to ease past AS Monaco, Dynamo Kiev, Wisla Krakow and Austria Vienna to go through the final. The Swedish side’s most notable moment in that season was at the semi final when they eliminated Austria Vienna 1-0 on aggregate. Tommy Hansson scored the winning goal of the game.

Some other Malmoe’s games of glory were staged in two seasons. The first one was at the second round in 1975/76. They were able to beat the eventual Champions Bayern Munich 1-0 at the first leg before losing 0-2 in the reverse fixture. The second one was at the first round in 1989/90 when Malmoe surprisingly knocked out the star-studded Inter Milan led by the German trio, Jurgen Klinsmann, Lothar Mattheus and Andreas Brehme. They won 1-0 over the Italian side at home and held them in a 1-1 draw.

Unfortunately, their great victory at the first round in that season did not endure at the second round. KV Mechelen trashed them 4-1 on aggregate. That was the second most disappointing result after the loss in 1979 final.
