Information on Spain National Football Team World Cup tickets

Spain is the new official giant in the world cup. Despite being known for its competitive top flight and world class clubs, they have just sealed their silverware in the last decade. Considering the great talents they have had, Spain are supposed to have more titles or at least finals to reach instead of just one. They are in progress of proving so in the next edition after the end of their golden generation.

Overall Campaign

La Furia Roja have made fifteen appearances in the world cup finals. They clinched a title once in South Africa 2010 and became the semifinalist once in 1950. Those are their most notable results in their overall campaign. In 2010, Spain won the world cup after thumping Netherlands 1-0 at the final through a single goal of Andres Iniesta. Previously, they eased past Portugal, Paraguay and Germany at the knock out stage. It was still quite surprising at first since Xavi and Co began their campaign with a defeat from Switzerland at the opener. Meanwhile, in 1950, Spain could only finish at the bottom of the table in the round robin final system after Uruguay, Brasil and Sweden.

In the other thirteen editions, Spain did not leave much impression to their fans. Before winning the world cup trophy, they were even notorious for being called ‘the quarter finalist favorite’ due to the fact that a quarter final was the furthest stage they could reach, which they did on five occasions, in 1938, 1982, 1986, 1994, 2002. Spain also only managed to go through the round of 16 three times, in 1990, 2006 and 2018. Their worst results were in Chile 1962, England 1966, Argentina 1978, France 1998 and Brasil 2014 since they were unable to progress from the group stage.

Iconic Moments

There are two most memorable moments for Spain. Both of them are in 2010 for sure. At the semifinal, Vicente del Bosque’s men managed to prove the world that they are one of the elite. Germany was the slight favourite due to their historic achievements but it was Spain which advanced to the final. In a tight affair, Carles Puyol’s header found the back of the net and sent them to the summit. In the final, once again, La Furia Roja was involved in a difficult match. However, their consistent tiki-taka football eventually led to a glory they had been waiting for with Andreas Iniesta’s only goal in the extra time.

Their most devastating moment happened four years later. At the group stage, Spain was seeded with Netherlands, Chile and Australia. It was meant to be doable to go through. Yet, nobody ever dared to imagine that their golden generation had come to the end. At the opener, La Furia Roja who was European Champion holder, was trashed by De Oranje 1-5. Xabi Alonso’s lead was nothing as Arjen Robben and Co ran rampant to punish their defence for their prone to counterattack and pressing.

Top Figures

The Barcelona connection in late 2000s and early 2010s from Andreas Iniesta, Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Carles Puyol were the catalyst of their success. They were accompanied by Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Cesc Fabregas and David Villa plus David Silva. A special credit shall be addressed to Vicente del Bosque too. He was the figure who helped the blend of Barcelona and Madrid players who had been traditionally in a rivalry even while wearing the same La Furia Roja shirt.
