Information on Sweden National Football Team World Cup tickets

Sweden is probably more famous for their individual players from Henrik Larsson, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and recently Emile Forsberg. Yet, as a team, they are nothing more than the dark horse in the world cup finals. It is quite in contrast to the 1940s and 1950s when they were considered one of the best teams in Europe and the world despite not being able to win a title yet.

Overall Campaign

Sweden have qualified to world cup finals in twelve editions. Their most distinguished achievement was in 1958 when they were the host and could advance to the summit after eliminating Soviet Union and Germany at the knock out stage. Only the magical Pele and his Brasilian jogo bonito team could prevent them from lifting the trophy. Their next best results were in 1950 and 1994 while finishing the third and in 1938 when Blagut was on the fourth place. In Brasil 1950, Sweden reached the final four alongside Brasil, Uruguay and Spain. They eventually finished third on the table. Meanwhile in USA 1994, Tomas Brolin and Co was seeded with Brasil, Cameroon and Russia at the group stage and could finish second. At the knock out stage, they eased past Saudi Arabia and Romania before taking on Brasil again. In the previous encounter, both sides shared spoils but this time Selecao won the game through a single goal of Romario’s header. Fortunately, their confidence was still high and managed to complete the tournament with a big win in the third place play-off against Bulgaria.

Meanwhile, in the remaining appearances, Blagut’s campaign ended variously, at the quarter final in Russia 2018 and in Italy 1934, in the round of 16 (1974, 2002 and 2006) and at the preliminary round (1970, 1978 and 1990).

Iconic Moments

Sweden’s moments of glory have been in several editions. The first amazing one was the semi final 1958. George Raynor’s men crushed the defending Champions Germany 3-1. Skoglund, Gren and Hamrin netted the winning goals of the game. The next one was in 1994 quarter finals. The game against Romania was a thrilling encounter. Tomas Brolin took the lead first but only two minutes before the final whistle Florin Radiucioiu found the equaliser. In the extra time, it was Romania who bagged another goal first before Kenneth Anderson levelled the score sheet. The game had to be decided on penalties and Thomas Ravelli rose to save the day. They finally went through the last four for the first time in 36 years.

Their most devastating moment was surely their failure to clinch the title in 1958. Blagut was confident that they could beat Pele and Co easily. Niels Liedholm did lift their hope at first but it lasted only for five minutes. Brasil then found their rythm and scored five goals through Vava’s brace, Pele’s brace and Mario Zagallo’s goal with Simonsson’s goal meddling among Selecao’s impressive play just ten minutes before the end.

Top Figures

Zlatan Ibrahimovic might be globally famous but he is not one of the players with distinguished contribution in the world cup finals. Niels Liedholm, Kalle Svensson, Kurt Hamrin, Tomas Brolin, Martin Dahlin, Thomas Ravelli, Kenneth Anderson, Klas Ingesson and Henrik Larsson deserve more recognition for their role in the world cup history with George Raynor and Tommy Svensson taking charge of the incredible 1958 and 1994 teams.
