Serie A is the top professional football league in Italy and one of the most storied football leagues in the world. Of the 100 greatest footballers in history, voted by FourFourTwo magazine in 2017, 42 had played in Serie A, more than any other league in the world.
It comprises 18 teams and much like other European leagues and competes between August and May. UEFA ranks the competition fourth in Europe behind the Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga, but Serie A had previously led the UEFA rankings for much of the 1990s.
Regarded as the most tactical league in the world, Italian clubs are famous for their astute defence, none more so than The Old Lady of Italian football, Juventus. Turin’s famous club, Juve, have won the division 35 times, making them by far the most successful Italian side, with the two Milan-based clubs – AC and Inter – behind with 18 championships apiece.
Juventus, Milan and Inter, along with Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio and Napoli, are known as the Seven Sisters of Italian football. It’s worth a trip to all seven to say you have experienced a real Italian atmosphere. Compare ticket prices with us here.
