Information on Ireland National Football Team World Cup tickets

Ireland is one European team which has very few appearances in the world cup finals but quite impressive in the outcome. Unlike their neighbour, Scotland, which never advance from the group stage in their entire world cup campaign, The Boys in Green are quite the opposite, by being able to progress to the next stage in each and every of their appearance. The ladyluck seems to be on their side quite often when it comes to the performance in the world cup finals.

Overall Campaign

Ireland have just managed to qualify to the final round three times, in 1990, 1994 and 2002. They always have fond memories in each of those editions. Their debut in Italy 1990 was considered as the most successful and fortunate one. Jack Charlton’s men were able to reach a quarter final without a single win and only scoring two goals in the tournament. They were included in the supposedly ‘the group of death’ with England and the EURO 1988 champions Netherlands, plus Egypt. Yet, Neil Quinn and Co mustered three draws and still went through the round of 16. At this stage, they edged out Romania on penalties before losing 0-1 to the host Italy. Four years later in USA, the Boys in Green did better at the group stage by finishing runner-up with four points and toppling Italy. Nevertheless, their campaign was halted by De Oranje. In Japan-Korea 2002, Ireland did even better by still finishing the second on the table but collecting five points from two draws and one win. Mick McCarthy’s side was actually still went unbeaten in the competition but they headed to the exit after being knocked out by Spain on penalties in the round of 16. Sadly,  they have not succeeded to secure one ticket to World Cup finals again since then.

Iconic Moments

Ireland’s most incredible moment was in fact the opener in USA 1994. Jack Charlton was still leading the team and had to take on Gli Azzurri which ended their campaign four years earlier. The game was tight but Ireland shockingly opened the score sheet through Ray Houghton’s long range strike. It turned out to be the only goal of the game and was the sweet revenge for their defeat in Rome. The next iconic moment was in 1990 round of 16. Ireland was up against Romania with their talented young guns such as George Hagi and Marius Lacatus. Both sides shared spoils in 120 minutes, but Ireland came out as a winner by winning 5-4 on a shoot out.

Nevertheless, Ireland’s saddest moment was in 1994 round of 16. They were unable to level Netherlands and conceded twice, one of which was preceded by Pat Bonner’s mistake.

Top Players & Managers

Jack Charlton was undoubtedly the key figure behind Ireland’s fruitful campaign in 1990 and 1994. He guided Steve Staunton, Neil Quinn, Ray Houghton, Roy Keane, Pat Bonner, Tony Cascarino to progress further. Another key man in command was Mick McCarthy who led Irish next generation with Robbie Keane, Jason McAteer, Ian Harte and Shay Given in it in 2002.
