Information on Italy National Football Team World Cup tickets

Italy is one of the two teams with the second most World Cup titles in history. They have appeared in a couple of finals too. Italy and the world cup is inseparable. No wonder their absence in Russia 2018 made the tournament somehow incomplete. Yet, it never takes long for them to bounce back as football is already apart of their life.

Overall Campaign

Gli Azzurri have made eighteen appearance in the world cup finals with four titles in hand. They clinched it in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006. Interestingly, Italy always met their regional contenders in the summit during their glorious campaign. They beat Czechoslovakia in 1934 and Hungary in the following years. In 1982, they dismantled Germany plus France in 2006 on penalties. However, when they faced off the non European team in the final, the fortune was not on their side. Such is proven on two occasions, in Mexico 1970 and USA 1994. In both editions, Italy was beaten by Brasil, 1-4 and 2-3 on penalties respectively. Besides reaching the finals, they also had finished third in 1990 when they were the host after losing to Argetina on penalties in the semi final but then won 2-1 over England in the third place play off, and on the fourth place in 1978 after being thumped by Brasil in the third place playoff.

Their worst campaigns were in 1950, 1954, 1962, 1966, 1974, 2010 and 2014 edition, with the most dreadful ones in the last two. In both editions, Italy who was considered one of the favourite but failed to go through. In South Africa 2010, Marcello Lippi’s side could only muster a draw against Paraguay and New Zealand plus were beaten by Slovakia, while in Brasil 2014, Italy’s form after a 2-1 victory over England digressed while meeting Costa Rica and Uruguay.

Iconic Moments

Italy’s most distinguished moment was the fixture against Germany in 1982 final and 2006 semi final. In the former one, Enzo Bearzot’s men managed to have three-goal lead through Paolo Rossi’s Marco Tardelli’s and Alessandro Altobelli’s goal before Paul Breitner scored a lifeline, while in the latter one, Andrea Pirlo and Co could frustrate Die Mannschaft who had been knocking the door almost the entire game before they could pick up two late goals by Fabio Grosso and Alberto Gilardino.

Their iconic negative moment was definitely the semi final in 1990 against Argentina in Napoli, the home of Diego Maradona, the legendary skipper on the opposition side and the less prosper region. As the host, Italy should have the advantage. Ironically, it was Argentina who enjoyed the luxury, all because of the one and only Maradona in it, the hero of Neapolitans. Almost the entire spectators at San Paolo were behind Maradona in spite of their own nation. Salvatore Schillacchi’s goal was eventually cancelled out by Claudio Caniggia’s header. The game ended in 3-4 for the Argentine after the shootout.

Top Players & Managers

There have been a number of names contributing well in their world cup campaign but these key figures managed to lift the trophy in the end. They are Vitorrio Puzzo, Enzo Bearzot and Marcelo Lippi as the boss who guided the team consisting of Raimundo Orsi, Silvio Piola, Guiseppe Meazza, Paolo Rossi, Dino Zoff, Marco Tardelli, Andrea Pirlo, Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Grosso, Marco Materzzi, Alessandro del Piero and Francesco Totti.
