Ajax Information and Details
Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax or simply Ajax, named after the legendary Greek hero, is one of the oldest clubs and has been the most successful club in the Netherlands since it was founded in 1900 in the city of Amsterdam.
A genuine elite European football club, Ajax has dominated Dutch football since the inception of the Eredivisie in 1956, winning 34 titles and 19 KNVB Cups. One of only five teams to have won all three major UEFA competitions, Ajax have won the UEFA Champions leagueEuropean Cup four times, the most recent being in 1995.
Whether the 1970s or 2010s, every generation seems to bring a new wave of talented, young Ajax teams to the top of european football. The Ajax of Johan Cruyff, whose name now adorns their home stadium, in the 1970s, Marco van Basten’s team with Cruyff as coach in the 1980s, Louis van Gaal’s young team of the 1990s or even the Champions League semi-finalists of 2020, every Ajax team seems to have the blood of its youth programme within it.
The last European trophy for the club was the 1995 Champions League, but you would not bet against another young generation coming through in the next few years to challenge on that stage. Compare ticket prices for the Johan Cruyff arena to see the next generation in action.
