Also known as Liverpool FC, Liverpool FC are often refered to as The Reds, as soon as tickets are available, they will be listed here on Seat Compare.
Liverpool is the most decorated team in English football, especially in European football. However, in FA Cup, they are not the best one or even second best. The Reds are still behind their national classic rival, Manchester United. Yet, their domestic games in Anfield with more than 53,000 spectators have always been dazzling and daunting at the same time for their opposition, including in FA Cup.
The Reds are the place for the marquee players from UK and abroad. Some of them did manage to make the difference in their FA Cup campaign by helping Liverpool to lift the trophies for several times. They are Roger Hunt, Phil Thompson, Ian Rush, Kenny Daglish, Peter Beardsley, Ray Houghton, Steve McManaman, Steven Gerrard, Garry McAllister, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher, Luis Garcia and Pepe Reina. Their glorious days in this tournament were led by their distinguished bosses in Liverpool’s history, Bill Shankly, Kenny Danglish, Gerard Houlier and Rafael Benitez.
Top Achievemets
The Reds have not been exactly famous till their rise in 1970s. They have clinched seven titles so far starting from 1965 when they thumped Don Revie’s Leeds United, followed by 1974 as Bill Shankly guided his team to trash Newcastle United. Their next silverwares were clinched in the next five seasons. The 1980s was Liverpool’s next glorious decade when Kenny Danglish brought them to win the cup twice in 1986 and 1989 plus another one in 1992. Then their era of major title drought began and last just as the new century started.
Beside winning the titles, Liverpool have also suffered a loss on seven occasions. Their first defeat in the summit was in 1914 when they were beaten by Burnley 0-1. Their next failures took place in 1950 when Arsenal trashed them 2-0. Unfortunately, that was not the last one. There were five more finals ended in disappointment, the 1971, 1977, 1988, 1996 and 2012 edition.
Iconic Moments
There has been a rise and fall in Liverpool’s FA Cup campaign. Their iconic moment was surely the first final in 1965. Bill Shankly’s men managed to crush the favourite, Leeds United 2-1. Roger Hunt took the lead but The Whites’ skipper Billy Bremmer found the equaliser but Ian St. John bagged the wining goal during the extra time. Their next memorable one were in 1989 and 1986 finals. In those two occasions, Ian Rush and Co smashed their local contender, Everton in a Merseyside derby in Wembley.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s most devastating moment was in 1996 final. Back then, Roy Evans was leading the Reds whose more notorious for their ‘Spice boys’ the nickname to mock their promising youngsters, Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Stan Collymore, and Jamie Redknapp, than their accolades on the pitch. They were facing off Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United which also relied on their young guns, David Beckham, Paul Scholas, Nicky Butt and Neville brothers. Liverpool was hoping for bouncing back after their gloomy years between 1992 and 1995 and such final was a perfect one to show their revival to the world. Sadly, the ladyluck did not smile at them as United triumphed through a single goal of Eric Cantona.
