Also known as The Citizens, Manchester City are often refered to as Man City, as soon as tickets are available, they will be listed here on Seat Compare.
The city of Manchester might have been more famous for Manchester United in the past but their noisy neighbour, Manchester City, have joined the elite recently, especially since the arrival of the Abu Dhabi investment in late 2000s. Their venue, Etihad Stadium has created a lively atmosphere with more than 55,000 spectators in it during their European nights since their return to UEFA Champions League in 2011.
The Citizens’s key figures in their Champions League campaign are certainly world class names such as Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure, David Silva, Joe Hart, Gabi Jesus, Fernandinho, Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez. Each has played their important role for the team in the tournament. However, their success in the continental campaign was mainly led by the notable foreign managers, Mauricio Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola. These two names have brought the team to the crucial stages of the Champions League after the series of poor defeats.
Top Achievements
Manchester City is definitely one of the richest team in the world today but when it comes to the top tier continental trophy, they have yet managed to clinch even a single one. Their most notable result was in 2020/21 season when the former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola guided Kevin de Bruyne and Co to their first even final. Another one was in 2016, under the Chilean manager, Mauricio Pellegrini, the team was able to progress to their first UCL semi final.
Their campaign in those two glorious sadly had to end in disappointment. The Citizens was thumped by Chelsea in Porto final 2021 and headed to the exit after a tough encounter against the eventual Champions Real Madrid. Sergio Aguero and Co lost 0-1 only in aggregate.
Iconic Moments in the Champions League
The Mancunian side’s iconic moments might not be that many, considering their constant entry in UCL just began in the last decade. Their most recent memorable moments were somehow related to PSG, their fellow rich team. In two occasions, 2016 and 2021, they progressed to semi final and final respectively by winning over PSG at the previous stage. They won 3-2 in aggregate against Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Co plus 4-1 over Pocchettino;s men. Another unforgettable moment was when they held Real Madrid at the first leg of 2016 semi final in a goalless draw. Joe Hart was in-form to frustrate Cristiano Ronaldo and Co with a number of great saves.
Their most horrible moments in UCL were the four early exits in Pep Guardiola’s first four seasons. Monaco, Liverpool, Tottenham and Lyon were their nightmare between 2017 to 2020 as they unexpectedly crushed the Citizens’ dream too soon at the round of 16 and quarter finals.
