Southampton Football Club was founded in 1885 by members of the St. Mary’s Church of England Young Men’s Association and have carried on the nickname ‘the Saints’ since then and still wear the red-and-white stripes associated with the Church to this day.

Based on the south coast of England, the Saints have a long-standing rivalry with Portsmouth FC, with whom they compete in the South Coast Derby.

Their sole major domestic cup triumph came in the FA Cup in 1976 as they defeated Manchester United 1-0. Aside from that feat, Southampton FC last won a league title in 1960 when they got promoted from the old Division Three.

Times have changed on the south coast since then. In their modern St. Mary’s Stadium since 2001, the Saints have retained their place in the Premier League since 2012 and have become a popular destination for European players and managers to begin their careers in England. Sadio Mané and Virgil van Dijk both arrived at Liverpool from Southampton.
