Nîmes Olympique or simply Nîmes, is a club founded 1937 in the former Roman city of Nîmes in the south of France. The club plays its home matches at the Stade des Costières located within the city.
Known as Les Crocodiles for the animal’s links to the city’s Roman history, the club adopted a red and white home strip for much the same reason.
Playing their home games at the Stade des Costières, which holds over 18,000 fans, the Nîmes faithful have seen some success over the years. Winning the French cup in 1996 allowed them to qualify for the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup the following season.
But perhaps the club is best remembered as being Eric Cantona’s final club in France, after throwing the ball at a referee during a league match for Nîmes, Cantona was summoned to a disciplinary committee where he proceeded to call each of the members ‘idiots’ after which he was quickly transferred to Leeds United for under £1 million.
