The top football league in Europe for the last five years according to UEFA, La Liga is the highest professional football division in Spain. It’s contested by 20 teams each year with the bottom 3 teams being relegated to La Liga 2 and being replaced by the top 2 teams from that league plus a playoff winner. The league runs from August to May, much like other European leagues.
La Liga is one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world, ranking third behind only the Premier League of England and Germany’s Bundesliga in a list of the most popular football divisions in the world.
In it’s 91 year history, 62 teams have competed in the league, but the majority have been won by two clubs synonymous with the Spanish game – Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Not just in the Messi and Ronaldo era, Real and Barcelona have been great rivals going back to the start of La Liga, Madrid having captured the title 33 times to the Catalan club’s 26. Real were dominant throughout the 1960s and 70s but since the 1990s Barcelona were the club to beat, capturing 16 titles.
But there is a lot more to La Liga than those two clubs, Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Basque club Athletic Bilbao have also dominated domestically. A La Liga night is one unlike any other, pay a trip to any major city in Spain and compare the best ticket prices for a La Liga game with us.
