Deportivo Alavés, S.A.D. or Alavés was originally named Sport Friends Club in 1921 but changed the name shortly after. Based in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country in Spain, Alavés is usually recognised as the third team from the region following Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad.

Between the formation of the club in 1921 and the turn of the 20th century, CD Alavés spent just six seasons in Spain’s top league, with an 8th place finish being their best in that period.
