Cagliari Calcio comes from the capital city of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. They became the first club to win a Scudetto from south of Rome and the only Island club to do so in 1970 on the back of the legendary Italian striker Gigi Riva.
Having moved grounds many times over the years, Cagliari are rebuilding the Sant’Elia stadium, which was declared unfit in 2012 and hope to have it open for the 2021 season. They wear the city’s traditional blue and red colours and feature the flag of Sardinia in its crest. The club is also appropriately known as “Isolani” or ‘the islanders’.
With a historic Serie A title in 1970 under their belts, Cagliari have gone through periods of success, most notably in the early 1990s under Claudio Ranieri and Carlo Mazzone, where they were promoted to Serie A and had a memorable run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1994, beating Italian giants Juventus in the quarter-final over two legs.
