Information on Chile National Football Team World Cup tickets

Chile is one of the CONMEBOL founders and have been able to play in World Cup quite often. Their Overall Campaign has been quite satisfactory as well compared to any other South American teams apart from the big three, Argentina, Brasil and Uruguay. However, they are still less progressive and constant in the world cup lately despite winning Copa America twice consecutively in the last decade. Their failure to qualify in Russia 2018 seems to be proving it.

Overall Campaign

Chile was one of the contestants in the first world cup edition. They have made nine appearances in total with 1962 edition as their best campaign since they could win the third place. Lionel Sanchez and Co managed to ease past USSR at the quarter final after finishing second below Germany at the group stage but lost to the reigning champions Brasil. Luckily, they managed to snatch a late win against Yugoslavia in the third place play off. Their next notable results were in their last three ones, in France 1998, South Africa 2010 and Brasil 2014. On those three occasions, Chile’s campaign was once again halted by Brasil, 1-4, 0-3 and 2-3 on penalties respectively. Selecao seems to be their worst nightmare in their knock out stage as they eliminated them four times in history. In the other appearances, the 1930, 1950, 1966, 1974 and 1982 edition, the team was not able to progress. Their worst campaign was in Spain 1982 when they were unable to even pick up a point and defeated by Austria 0-1, Germany 1-4 and even Algeria 2-3.

Iconic Moments

Chile’s most memorable moment was perhaps on match day two at the group stage in 1962. It was the game which was notorious for its own name, ‘The Battle of Santiago’ due the mass brawl on the pitch among the players from both sides. As the host, they dismantled Gli Azzurri, the two-time World Cup Champions, 2-0 through the goals of Ramirez and Toro. The result did not only helped them to seal one berth at the knock out stage, but also to slam Italy in public in relation to their journalists’ criticism on Chilean people and nation on press before the match. Another noteworthy moment for Chile in the world cup final round was in 2014 match day two at the group stage again. This time Alexis Sanchez and Co managed to smash Spain, the reigning Champion, 2-0. Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz netted their winning goal. The result instantly secured their place in the round of 16 as well as sent La Furia Roja to the exit.

Meanwhile, their most disappointing result was also in 2014. In the round of 16, Chile met Brasil again three times in a row since France 1998. This time Jorge Sampaoli’s side was more confident and did put pressure on the host but David Luiz opened the scoring before Alexis Sanchez equalised not long after. The game remained tight and they had to go through a shoot out this time. Unfortunately, La Roja could not endure their positive form on penalties. The Samba goalie Julio Cesar was the key figure here.

Top Players & Managers

Their star in 1962, Lionel Sanchez was certainly Chile’s notable figure in the world cup finals. He was playing alongside Jaime Ramirez and Eliado Rojas and brought the team to the semi final. Their next best generation was the stars in 2010s with Alexis Sanchez, Claudio Bravo, Charles Aranguiz and Arturo Vidal. Fernando Riera and Jorge Sampaoli are the distinguished figures in La Roja’s world cup campaign.
