Information on Portugal National Football Team World Cup tickets

Portugal is one of the new rising powerhouses in European football. Their progress has been quite remarkable lately, especially since they have one of the two megastars in the world in the last decades. Their current regional silverware also lifts up their reputation too. However, in World Cup finals, they still remain the one of the dark horses which comes and goes.

Overall Campaign

Portugal have only made seven appearances in the world cup finals, with five consecutive ones since 2002. However, on those occasions, Seleccao das Quinas only thrived on his debut in 1966 and exactly forty years later. In England 1966, led by Eusebio, they managed to ease past Hungary, the reigning Champions, Brasil and Bulgaria at the group stage, then North Korea at the quarter final but lost to the host England 1-2. At the third place play off, Portugal could snatch a 2-1 win over USSR. Meanwhile, in Germany 2006, the young Cristiano Ronaldo and Co had easier opponents at the group stage as they were seeded with Mexico, Iran and Angola. At the knock out stage, they eliminated Netherlands and England before suffering a loss against France in the last four plus at the third place play off versus the host Germany.
In the remaining editions, Portugal could not go as further than the round of 16, which they did in South Africa 2010 and Russia 2018. At those times, CR7 and Co were beaten by Spain and Uruguay respectively. Their campaign was even worse in Mexico 1986, Japan and Korea 2002 and Brasil 2014 since they were eliminated too early at the group stage.

Iconic Moments in the World Cup

Seleccao das Quinas surely have a number of moments of glory in the world cup finals. Their most memorable one was the last game of the group stage in 1966. Portugal was the debutante against the two-time Champions back then with Pele in it. The result was shocking. They dismantled Selecao 3-1. Simoes scored one followed by Eusebio’s brace. The defending Champions only responded once through Rildo’s goal. Such victory sent Brasil to the exit. Another unforgettable moment was at the quarter final in 2006. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammate at the club, Wayne Rooney had to square off. The Portuguese’ megastar’s infamous eye gesture had been considered to play the part of sending off his pal in Manchester. The game ended in a stalemate with goalless draw but Portugal eventually knocked out the Three Lions on a shootout.
Nevertheless, their most horrible moments took place in 2002 and 2014. At the opener of Japan-Korea 2002, Antonio Olivera’s men were stunned by USA. They were beaten 2-3 despite being the favourite with some star players in the squad like Luis Figo and Rui Costa. Such defeat led to their failure to progress since they suffered another loss against the home side, South Korea on matchday three. In Brasil 2014, it was even worse. Paulo Bento’s side was already hapless and hammered 0-4 by Germany at the opener.

Top Players & Managers

Portugal’s top players and managers in their world cup campaign are not that many. Eusebio, Cristiano Ronaldo, Maniche, Luis Figo, Ricardo and Deco are Portuguese key men on the pitch, whereas Manuel da Luz Alfonso and Luis Felipe Scolari are the notable managers who contributed the best for them in the world cup.
