Information on Australia National Football Team World Cup tickets

Australia have a unique story in their world cup history. It is by far the only nation which could qualify to the world cup final round from two confederations. The Socceroos used to represent Oceania before switching to AFC Asia in mid 2000s. Overall, they have made only five apperances in the world cup finals. Their debut was in Germany 1974 but did not end well.

Overall Campaign

Australia’s campaign in those five apperances mostly ended in the group stages from their maiden one in World Cup 1974, 2010, 2014 and 2018. The only notable one was in Germany 2006 when the team under Guus Hiddink managed to progress to the knock out stage. Unfortunately, their joy in the world cup  which just began was halted by the eventual champion, Italy, 0-1 through a controversial goal. It was their last time they qualified under Oceania Football Confederation (OCF). Their next editions starting from 2010, Socceroos have qualified to the final round consecutively under AFC Asia flag although they have failed to go through the next stage in three editions.

Iconic Moments

Autralia’s campaign in the world cup history might be limited. Yet, they still have a few remarkable moments to remember. The first iconic one was on matchday three of Germany 2006 agaianst Croatia. Mark Viduka and Co needed to avoid losing here to seal one spot to the round of 16. However, the game did not start well at first. They already conceded on 2nd minute through Dario Srna’s goal. Yet, Craig Moore’s penalty leveled their score sheet. At the second half, Nico Kovac restored Vatreni’s lead. Yet, Harry Kewell’s equaliser on 79th minute finally led them to go through. Another notable moment was still in 2006 but on matchday one. Guus Hiddink’s men cheered up for their ever win in their tournament’s history while facing Japan. Tim Cahill’s brace and John Aloisi’s goal helped them secure 3-1 victory.

Meanwhile Aussie’s devastating moment was certainly the round of 16 in 2006. They were knocking on the doors of Gli Azzurri throughout the game and forced Marcelo Lippi’s men to stay at the backline more. However, they had to lose by Totti’s late penalty after Fabio Grosso’s diving in the six yard box in his attempt to penetrate Socceroos’ defence. Many pitied their failure and criticised Grosso’s move and the referee, but nothing could be done about it.

Top Players & Managers

The Socceroos’ best players and managers were in fact their golden generation in mid 2000s who had thrived in World Cup U-20 in the previous years like Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell, John Aloisi, Tim Cahill, Mark Schwazner, Lucas Neill and Mark Bresciano. Yet, only one headcoach who marked their history in the world cup finals. He is none but the high profile Dutch boss, Guus Hiddink.
