Information on Czech Republic National Football Team World Cup tickets

Czech Republic was once a highly reputable team in the major international tournament including in world cup under the name of Czechoslovakia. They were one of the teams which were near miss of the title. Yet, things have changed quite the opposite under the current name. Czech Rep and Serbia (formerly known as Yugoslavia) are quite likely sharing the same misfortune.

Overall Campaign

Czech Republic have had a contrast record of appearance, not only in terms of result but also in numbers. In total, they qualified to the final round nine times but only one of which is under the current name. Their best result is being the runners-up twice, in 1934 and 1962 when they were beaten by Italy and Brasil. Their next notable outcome was in Italy 1990 and in France 1938 when they could progress to the last eight. In the former one, Jozef Venglos’s side finished the second behind the host at the preliminary round and dismantled Costa Rica at the next stage before being knocked out by the eventual champions, Germany, while in the latter one, in shorter tournament, Oldrich Nejedly and Co lost to Brasil after thrashing Netherlands.

In the remaining five editions, in Switzerland 1954, Sweden 1958, Mexico 1970, Spain 1982 as Czechoslovakia plus in Germany 2006 as Czech Republic, their campaign only ended up at the first round.

Iconic Moments

Czech Rep’s most memorable moment was when they reached the final twice. In 1934, they eased past Romania, Switzerland and Germany to the final. Unfortunately, they lost in a tight affair against the host Italy after extra time. Another one in Chile 1962, Josef Masopust and Co did not start well as they only managed to collect four points ( or three points in the older point system which a win only equalled two points instead of three as today) but at the knock out stage, they were in-form and edged out Hungary and Yugoslavia to crave their way to the summit. Sadly, the reigning champions Brasil remained too strong for them despite losing their star Pele due to a serious injury.

However, the most disappointing moment was in World Cup 2006, their first return after separating from Slovakia. They had one of the most promising squad to be the dark horse of the tournament with Petr Cech, Pavel Nedved, Jan Koller and Tomas Rosicky in the squad and performed well in EURO 2004. Nevertheless, they suffered two defeats from Ghana and the eventual champions Italy in an identical score 0-2 after their convincing start against USA at the opener.

Top Players & Managers

There have been a number of noteworthy names in Czech Rep/ Czechoslovakia’s world cup campaign such as Oldrich Nejedly who won the top scorer award in 1938, Josef Kostalek, Frantisek Planicka, Josef Masopust, Ladislav Novak and Svatopluk Pluskal.
