Information on Russia National Football Team World Cup tickets

Russia used to be recognised as a strong team from the East. They had quite impressive world cup campaign under its old name USSR in from late 1950s to early 1990s. Unfortunately, the table has been turning after the dissolution of Soviet Union. With their official current name, Russia have been more well-known as the non favourite and barely remembered for their positive progress. However, there is a hope for improvement after their latest campaign as a host. Sbornaya is looking for another notable outcome in the next world cup.

Overall Campaign

As Soviet Union, the team made seven appearances in the world cup finals with 1960s as their peak era. USSR had respectable world class names in the squad such as the legendary Lev Yashin and Valentin Ivanov. They managed to end the tournament on the fourth place in 1966 while in 1958, 1962 and 1970, they were knocked out at the quarter finals. In the other three editions, in 1982, 1986 and 1990, their results were declining from being eliminated in the round of 16 and failed to advance from the group stage in Italy 1990.

Meanwhile, after the end of Soviet era, Russia’s best result was in 2018 when they were the host. Sbornaya could progress to the last eight after edging out Spain on penalties in the round of 16. At the group stage, Stanislav Cherchesov’s men finished as the group runner up below Uruguay. Unfortunately, Artem Dzuyba and Co’s hope to reach semi final dashed as they lost on penalties to Croatia after mustering a 2-2 draw. In the previous three appearances, USA 1994, Japan-Korea 2002 and Brasil 2014, Russia’s campaign always ended at the group stage.

Russia’s Iconic Moments in the World Cup

Under the name of USSR, their most noteworthy moment was in 1966 when they went through the last four after thumping Hungary 2-1. Chislenko and Porkujan netted the winning goal while the Magyar side only replied once. As Russia, their moment of glory came in the round of 16 in 2018. Despite being the host, Alexander Golovin and Co were not the favourite against Spain. Sergei Ignasevich bagged an own goal but Artem Dzyuba levelled the score sheet through his penalty. The game then went on till the winner had to be decided through a shoot out. At this stage, it was Igor Akinfeev was the hero throughout the match and on penalties. Their hoodoo against the high profile team in the major tournament was finally broken and Sbornaya progressed.

Russia’s horrible moment was on matchday three in Brasil 2014. Their final game against Algeria was a decisive one and Fabio Capello’s men needed a win to advance. At first, everything seemed to go as plan after Alexander Kokorin gave them the early lead. Unfortunately, the ladyluck moved away from their side as Algeria equalised thorugh Islam Slimani. There were no more goals and Alexander Kerzhakov and Co headed to the exit again.

Top Players & Managers

Soviet Union might have more honourable names to mention for their relatively better world cup campaign from Lev Yashin to Oleg Blokhin. Yet, for Sbornaya, their important figures who played crucial role in their improving world cup campaign are quite a few. Only Artem Dzyuba, Denis Cheryshev, Alexander Golovin, the goalie Igor Akinfeev and their boss Stanislav Cherchesov deserve recognition for their contribution.
