Information on Switzerland National Football Team World Cup tickets

Switzerland is one of the underrated dark horse in European football, Since the beginning of their emergence in international tournament as early as the 1930s to the latest world cup or EURO, they remain at the same level, the common side which could stun the world on a few occasions.

Switzerland’s World Cup History

Nati, the team’s nickname, have only made ten appearances in the world cup finals. Their best result is reaching the quarter finals in three editions, in Italy 1934, France 1938 and when they were the host in 1954. In the second and third World Cup, Switzerland were eliminated by two eventual runner up, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, whereas in 1954, they were smashed by Austria 5-7 at the last eight. In addition, the team could advance to the round of 16 four times. In USA 1994, under Roy Hodgson, Alain Sutter and Co had to lose 0-3 against Spain at the second round, while in Germany 2006, Kobi Kuhn’s side managed to topple France at the group stage but were unfortunate in the round of 16 after failing to capitalise at least two decent chances to score against Ukraine during the normal time plus unable to convert a single penalty in a shootout. Eight years later in Brasil, once again Granit Xhaka and Co qualified from the preliminary round. Yet, at the next stage, Ottmar Hizfield could not stop Messi to lead Argentina to thump them 1-0 after extra time. In Russia 2018, Vladimir Petkovic’s side managed to eliminate Serbia at the group stage but lost 0-1 to Sweden.

On the remaining four occasions, Nati failed to go through the knock out stage in Brasil 1950, Chile 1962, England 1966 and South Africa 2010 despite the fact that they defeated the eventual Champion Spain at the opener.

Iconic Moments

Switzerland’s iconic moments took place under Karl Rappan’s reign when they reached quarter finals. In 1954, they crushed Italy twice at the group stage 2-1 at the opener and 4-1 at the play off. Unfortunately, Josef Hugl and Co were dismantled by Wunderteam Austria 5-7, one of the highest scoring game in the world cup history. Meanwhile, in 1930s world cup, Andre Abegglen and Co beat Netherlands and Germany first before losing to Czechoslovakia 2-3 and Hungary 0-2.

The most heartbreaking moment was in World Cup 2006. Kobi Kuhn’s men were able to held France in a goalless stalemate, plus crushed both Togo and South Korea 2-0. Switzerland finished the top of the group and were confident to knock out Ukraine. However, the result was the opposite. Being held in a goalless draw again by Oleg Blokhin’s side, Switzerland missed a couple of chances including the penalties. Alexander Frei and Co headed to the exit despite having clean sheets and unbeaten run in the tournament.

Top Players & Managers

Nati’s positive record in the world cup finals, especially in the early edition could not be separated from Karl Rappan. He was leading the team with Andre Abegglen, Josef Hugl and Robert Ballaman in that era. Another name who deserves recognition was Kobi Kuhn who managed the unbeaten but unlucky team with Alexander Frei, Phillippe Sanderos and Tranquilla Barnetta in it
