Information on Ukraine National Football Team World Cup tickets

Ukraine is the only former USSR part which managed to qualify to the world cup final round, apart from Russia, since gaining independence in 1991. Unfortunately, they have only made one appearance so far, in Germany 2006. It was the only world cup edition when they had a number of star players in the national squad more than any other era, including their manager in EURO 2020 who was back then their first global star, Andrey Shevchenko.

Overall Campaign

Ukraine’s only world cup campaign was in Germany 2006. It was their success after their first attempt in World Cup 2002 play off but failed after being trashed by Rudi Voeller’s Germany. In this maiden world cup, Andrey Shevchenko and Co were able to advance to the last eight before suffering a loss from the eventual champions, Italy. Ukraine started their campaign with a big defeat, 0-4 against Spain on matchday one. However, they could bounce back on the next game after hammering Saudi Arabia 4-0. Andrey Rusol, Serhy Rebrov and Maxim Kalynchenko scored one goal each beside the skipper himself. In the last game at the group stage, they picked up another three point after thumping Tunisia 1-0 through a single goal of Shevchenko as he converted the penalty successfully to help them go through as the runner up. Unfortunately, that was the last goal they could bag in the tournament although Oleg Blokin’s side was still able to progress to the quarter finals.

Iconic Moments

The only iconic moment for Ukraine during the world cup final was definitely the round of 16 in 2006. At that time, Shevchenko and Co had to take on Switzerland finishing as the group leader despite being seeded with France. The former AC Milan forward, Shevcenko failed to capitalise several chances into the goal they need. Eventually, the games had to be decided on penalties. This time Olexander Shovkovsky was the hero as he could keep the clean sheet even till the shoot out.

Meanwhile, their most disappointing moment was in fact the next and last game of 2006 World Cup against Italy. Ukraine was lacklustre here and beaten 0-3. Gianluca Zambrotta opened the scoring and Luca Toni’s brace halted their campaign in their first international tournament.

Top Players & Managers

Andrey Shevchenko was still the key man in the team although he was not in his peak form during the tournament. The former Milan and Chelsea man scored twice only in Germany 2006. Other important figures in the team who contributed well in their world cup campaign was Serhiy Rebrov, Olexander Shovkovsky, Oleg Husyev, Anatoly Tymoschuk, Maxim Kalynchenko and Andrey Voronin. The manager who brought them to their first ever world cup final was the former USSR star in 1980s, Oleg Blokhin.
